Realogistics Completed Freight Forwarding Service for ATA Cargo from the UK to the Netherlands
1. Main Scope of Assignment
The client had a shipment of ATA cargo that needed to be transported from the UK to the Netherlands for exhibition and on-site use.
As the ATA Carnet was only endorsed for the Netherlands, the cargo needed to complete the relevant ATA customs procedures in the Netherlands upon entering the EU.
When planning the transportation solution, it was necessary to consider not only transit time and cost, but also whether the actual point of entry into the EU complied with the ATA Carnet requirements.
2. Transportation Method
International Ferry + Local Delivery in the Netherlands
The final solution was to use a direct ferry service from Harwich, UK to Hook of Holland, Netherlands. After the cargo arrived in the Netherlands, local transportation was arranged to the final destination.
3. Operational Challenge
The main challenge of this shipment was not the transportation from the UK to the Netherlands itself, but the ATA Carnet endorsement requirements.
Under the conventional road transportation route, the cargo would depart from Dover, UK, cross the English Channel to Calais, France, and then continue to the Netherlands.
This meant that France would be the first point of entry into the EU.
However, the client's ATA Carnet was endorsed only for the Netherlands. Therefore, if this route were used, it would be necessary to confirm in advance whether the relevant ATA customs procedures could be handled in France. If the Carnet requirements did not match the actual point of entry, it could create complications in subsequent customs procedures.
Therefore, this shipment could not simply follow the conventional UK–France–Netherlands road route. The transportation plan had to be redesigned based on the specific ATA Carnet requirements.
4. Realogistics' Solution
After confirming the cargo details and ATA Carnet requirements, Realogistics reassessed the transportation route.
Instead of the conventional:
Dover (UK) → Calais (France) → Netherlands
the route was changed to:
Harwich (UK) → Hook of Holland (Netherlands)
By using a direct ferry service from the UK to the Netherlands, the cargo could enter the Netherlands directly, avoiding entry into the EU through France.
After arriving in the Netherlands, the relevant ATA Carnet customs procedures were completed locally, followed by delivery to the final destination.
The cargo ultimately arrived in the Netherlands smoothly and completed the relevant procedures in accordance with the client's ATA Carnet requirements.
Summary
At first glance, the solution simply involved switching from road transportation to a ferry service. In reality, the key was to ensure that the transportation route matched the ATA Carnet requirements.
