Background

In April 2025, Realogistics was entrusted by a client to airship a consignment of pure batteries (hazardous materials) from the UK to Hong Kong. The shipment required special packaging, labeling, and a hazardous materials declaration. However, the client had no actual shipper at the origin to meet these requirements.

Challenges Faced

  1. FCB Packaging Application: The airline required a Fire Containment Bag (FCB) hazardous packaging permit, but there was no actual shipper in the UK to apply, and the overseas agent lacked authority.

  2. Lack of Hazardous Packaging Capability: The client’s warehouse in the UK was not equipped for hazmat packaging or labeling.

  3. Absence of Dangerous Goods Declaration (DGD) Provider: Without a designated shipper, the client could not provide the mandatory DGD.

Solutions Implemented

  1. FCB Application: Realogistics acted as the shipper's agent and successfully applied for the FCB permit through the airline's website, utilizing its expertise in battery logistics to provide the necessary technical specifications.

  2. Packaging and Labeling: Realogistics engaged an overseas agent to locate a qualified hazardous materials packaging company, which completed the required packaging and labeling.

  3. DGD Completion: Realogistics aggregated the necessary battery documentation and supplied the data to the packaging company, enabling the completion of the DGD.2

Operational Timeline

  • April 14, 2025: Received the client's order and the FCB application requirement. The client's warehouse could not assist due to lack of battery data.

  • April 15, 2025: Due to Realogistics’ long-term experience handling battery shipments and its relative familiarity with battery documentation and data, Realogistics provided the relevant information on the airline’s website based on past operational experience. After submitting for review, Realogistics successfully helped the customer obtain the Fire Containment Bag (FCB).

  • April 18, 2025: FCB application was approved and the permit number was obtained.

  • April 19-21, 2025: Coordinated pickup from the client's warehouse and transfer to the hazardous materials facility for packaging and labeling. Battery data was provided for DGD preparation.

  • April 23, 2025: Completed packaging, labeling, and DGD.

Outcome

With all pre-shipment requirements fulfilled, Realogistics expedited the air freight. The goods departed on schedule and arrived safely in Hong Kong, earning positive feedback from the client.
