Recently, a client entrusted Realogistics with a round-trip transport project for a batch of large-scale, special power plant equipment.

1. Project Timeline

From early September to late October 2026. A total of 5 flat rack containers were shipped in 3 batches, with an overall operational cycle of approximately 50 days.

2. Main Scope of Entrustment

The client entrusted Realogistics with the export and return transportation of a batch of large-scale special power plant equipment. The cargo dimensions exceeded the loading capacity of standard containers, requiring 40-foot Flat Rack (FR) containers for transport. After completing relevant operations in Hong Kong, the cargo was to be returned to Shanghai in its original containers. This was an integrated entrustment encompassing "export — bonded transit — re-entry."

The project involved multiple stages, including export, transit through the Hong Kong bonded area, and re-entry. It required the comprehensive coordination of out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo declaration, container loading and securing, round-trip documentation, segmented insurance, and Hong Kong transit operations.

3. Basic Cargo Information

• Commodity: Special power plant equipment

• Quantity: 5 pieces

• Gross Weight per Piece: Approx. 21 tons

• Dimensions per Piece: Approx. 9.83m × 3.03m × 3.45m

• Packaging: Bare/unpacked, utilizing wooden skids at the bottom bearing ISPM 15 marks

• Container Type: 40-foot Flat Rack (40' FR)

4. Transportation Mode and Route

FCL Ocean Freight + Hong Kong Bonded Area Transit + Original Container Return

Route:Port of Shanghai (Waigaoqiao) → Hong Kong Bonded Area → Port of Shanghai (Waigaoqiao)

The same flat rack containers were utilized for the round trip to avoid overseas transloading whenever possible, thereby minimizing the risk of cargo damage to the large equipment during transit.

5. Operational Challenges

• 1) High Requirements for OOG Cargo Loading and Declaration: Each piece measured approximately 9.83m in length, 3.03m in width, and 3.45m in height, with a gross weight of about 21 tons. Exceeding standard container limits, the cargo required advance declaration to the shipping carrier, application for flat rack space, and precise planning for loading and lashing schemes.

• 2) Tight Time Windows for Hong Kong Transit: Container pickup validity, terminal free time, and Hong Kong transit arrangements had to be seamlessly synchronized. Empty container extraction, discharging, drayage, storage, return vessel booking, and truck-to-ship handovers required advance coordination to avoid extra costs caused by node delays.

• 3) Typhoon Weather Increasing Port Operation Uncertainty: The project took place during the typhoon season. The Port of Shanghai was affected by consecutive typhoons, leading to port congestion and uncertainty regarding vessel arrival and berthing times. Additionally, trailer and depot resources were strained, increasing container drop-off and related operational costs, further complicating the overall schedule.

• 4) Advance Coordination Needed for Round-Trip Documentation and Insurance: The cargo had to be exported from Shanghai, processed in Hong Kong, and then returned to Shanghai, necessitating the advance linkage of round-trip documents. Insurance had to be arranged separately based on the respective round-trip transport stages and corresponding cargo values, ensuring coverage matched the actual transport conditions.

6. Realogistics' Solutions

• 1) Advance Planning for Flat Rack Transport: Realogistics proactively declared the OOG cargo to the carrier, coordinated flat racks and shipping space, and reasonably scheduled loading, lashing, and departure times to mitigate risks associated with OOG operations and shipping delays.

• 2) Comprehensive Loading Records: Upon completion of loading, photographs were taken of the cargo dimensions, loading, and lashing conditions. Operational records were retained to provide a concrete basis for transport handovers and subsequent verifications.

• 3) Advance Linkage of Round-Trip Documents: Shipping schedules and cargo data were synchronized in a timely manner for the outbound journey, and relevant documents were prepared in advance for the return. Segmented insurance was arranged according to different transport stages and cargo values, reducing documentation omissions and redundant coordination.

• 4) Comprehensive Coordination of Transit and Transport Nodes: Unified coordination was established with the client, trucking fleets, warehouses, and port stakeholders. Key nodes were closely monitored to promptly address changes brought about by typhoons, port congestion, and resource constraints, tightly controlling additional expenses.

7. Project Outcomes

The cargo was successfully shipped out in mid-September and returned to Shanghai in the original containers in late September, achieving zero cargo damage, zero container detention fees, and zero document rejections throughout the entire process.

The client highly recognized Realogistics for its proactive coordination and professional services in OOG cargo declaration, free time management, and segmented insurance arrangements. The successful completion of this project verified the feasibility and cost advantages of the "Flat Rack Transport + Hong Kong Bonded Area Transit + Round-Trip Document Coordination" model for the round-trip transportation of oversized cargo.
